Stop the Spread of Invasive Non Native Species!

Published 00:00 on 27 Mar 2017

The RYA, in conjunction with a range of government and maritime organisations, is hoping to raise the profile of a key issue for our waterways through it's 'Invasive Species Week' which will run from 27 March to 2 April.

Invasive aquatic species block up waterways and can damage boat engines and props. They can be spread from tiny fragments and many can survive out of water for over 2 weeks in damp conditions. Anyone who has visited some of the larger clubs in the last year may have had to take notice of their 'check, clean, dry' routines with wash down of boats and trailers on entry and exit from the venue, all designed to help cut down the spread of Zebra Mussels, Floating Pennywort and Killer Shrimps in inland water, and Carpet Sea Squirt, Trumpet Tube Worms and Wakame in the sea.

This issue is key for anyone visiting other clubs, or for visitors to our club and the attached poster gives more details for inland water users. If you are visiting another club make sure you wash your boat and trailer down, and give your sailing gear a good clean, before returning to RSC!
