Youth & Junior

The club has a thriving youth and junior section and benefits from over 30 years of investment by the club in young sailors. Our skills are acknowledged by the RYA awarding us British Youth Sailing Recognised Club status, we are one of the first clubs in the UK to achieve this.

As with all club activities, Youth & Junior (Y&J) sailing at Ripon SC is organised and managed by volunteers. It only works if everyone contributes so please get involved and help.

The objective is to foster a life-long love of sailing and to promote the social and physical benefits of sailing in all our young members and their families. To do this, the emphasis is on safe, fun activities which encourage social interaction as well as improving sailing skills. We have a wide range of activities and social events organised which allow our youngsters to grow, both in their sailing experience personally.

We encourage all young sailors, their parents and carers to support each other, both on and off the water at Ripon SC and away from the club. Many parents active at the club now have fond memories of strong supportive friendships formed at Ripon SC that have lasted into adulthood - some have resulted in successful happy marriages.

Friendships formed away from academic environments also provide a great source of solace and perspective for youngsters growing up in the demanding modern education system surrounded by (social) media pressure to conform to expected stereotypes and behaviours.Ripon SC is well placed to support your children as they grow up by providing a social and sporting outlet away from the usual education experience.

The Youth & Junior Sailing Secretary runs a small sub-committee to deliver pre-sailor, junior and youth events. We are always looking for additional help so please get in touch.Whilst the official title is Youth & Junior Sailing, the effort encompasses all youth, junior and pre-sailor activities at Ripon SC.

We have three main groups of members in our system, we define them as follows:

PRE-SAILORS (<7 years)

We actively encourage families with young children to enjoy their leisure time at the club.Involvement at a young age encourages children to get involved and aspire to be like the older children and maintains their interest as they start to sail.

If you want to take them out on the water – just go for it - pick a quiet warm day and go for a joy-ride.If your sailing skills and your confidence mean you don't think you can do this, then ask for help.Another club member will be more than happy to have an adventure with you and your young children on board.

There are toys in the conservatory when they need a break from their adventures and a storage box at the rear of the club house contains outside toys. Please return the toys when you have finished with them. These toys have been donated by generous members as well as a contribution from club funds.

Children who are too young to participate in the organised Y&J sailing events are still welcome at the club during the event, provided they are fully supervised by an adult. Please make sure they are wearing their buoyancy aids when near the water and encourage them to get involved rigging and de-rigging the boats, watching the sailing and generally be "part of it".Encouragement and involvement at an early age means they are more likely to want to sail in the future.

We endeavor to provide a few social and organised activities for this age group during the year, please see the website, events emails and noticeboards for information.

JUNIORS (7-12ish years)

Once our members reach 7 years they are eligible for the start sailing courses and they start the established pathway to becoming competent sailors with a love of the sport.Ripon SC has been running young sailor initiatives for over 30 years and has been extremely successful in getting children onto the water.

We also organize specific junior social activities, some at the club and others off-site, such as bowling. Please see the website, events emails and noticeboards for information.

YOUTHS (12ish - 18 years)

We recognize that as children grow up, their needs change and our youth section has a few specific activities targeted at them. Our longer term youth members are often extremely competent sailors, racing at high standard nationally and internationally. We celebrate all participation and endeavour, not just the winners; we also make a point of encouraging our competent youth members to get involved and help with junior sailing and novice youth sailors so that everyone knows each other and they support and contribute to each other's development, both on and off the water.

The club offers the Assistant Instructor Course to competent youth members which looks good on their university CV and provides a supervised introduction to the world of teaching and responsibility. We can also support DofE volunteering via our existing development system although we do not offer specific DofE programmes.
