Boats

The club has a training fleet of single and double handed dinghies, many of which are regularly used by our Youth & Junior sailors for training courses and at Improvers sessions. Members are also welcome to hire club boats to use in Sunday and Wednesday racing once they have reached St3/L2 standard.

Junior sailors most commonly complete their initial RYA courses in Optimists or RS Teras while older juniors and youth sailors may do their initial RYA courses in Toppers. All of these are RYA recognised junior classes and widely sailed at Ripon and at clubs around the region. The other most regularly sailed youth classes at the club are the ILCA (Laser), which can be sailed with different rig sizes, and the RS Feva which is a double handed youth class. The club has both of these boats in the training fleet, although they are not normally used during RYA courses.

Although there is no need to buy a boat to start to learn to sail, most young sailors enjoy the responsibility of having their own boat and keen sailors will want to have a boat that they can take to travel events. Second hand youth and junior boats are regularly advertised at the club and within the region and club members can provide advice and tips on what to look for when boat shopping. Please contact the Y&J sailing secretary via the club email address if you are looking for a boat to buy for you or your sailor.
