May ROTTERS

Published 10:04 on 9 Jun 2026

After a busy Open Day and the early May RYA courses, the ROTTERS session on Saturday 16th May was focused on giving our less experienced sailors valuable time on the water. The weather was great, with the sun shining and enough wind to make sailing easy, and the ROTTERS were out in force.

So many people sailed during the day that I'm bound to forget some of you, but there were plenty of highlights. We had first sails for Jess, Florence, Ben, James, William P and Frances, while Emily, Hattie and Lily appeared to be trying to work out just how many different ways three sailors can fit into two Oppies. I also need to thank Richard F, who did a great job getting as many people as possible out in the Visions in the limited time he had available.

Some of the older ROTTERS had a very productive morning being coached by Hannah, revising everything covered in the recent St2 courses, including capsize recovery, while Angus took the Oppy group to practice their man-overboard drills with a selection of impressively decorated milk bottles.

In the afternoon Thea, Frances and William spent a lot of time sailing up and down the lake, accompanied first by Oscar Y and then by Katy B. A bit of coach swapping also happened as Richard and Hannah had to leave, to be replaced by Ian and on a dying breeze we even managed to squeeze a couple of short races in before the rain appeared, where Rowan S did amazingly well.

At the same time, we had another five ROTTERS travel to Scaling Dam SC to take part in the NEYYSA Traveller event. They did brilliantly, with Archie finishing second overall, Callum taking the U14 prize and Jasper coming out on top in the U12s. This was an absolutely fantastic set of results and a great representation of the club away from home.
