What a spectacular day on the water! Ripon Sailing Club opened its gates on Saturday 25th April for our annual Discover Sailing Open Day, and the turnout exceeded all expectations with numerous new members and training courses booked. The sun made a welcome appearance, providing the perfect backdrop for a day filled with community spirit and nautical adventure.

A True Team Effort

The success of the day was built on a foundation of incredible collaboration. It wasn't just a club event; it was a showcase of the whole Ripon Sailing Club community. Heartfelt thanks go out to:

  • RSC Volunteers: From the "Meet and Greet" team, our safety boat skippers, taster sail helms. Galley team (top notch sarnies!), RC Yacht helms and everyone else that helped in whatever capacity, our members showed exactly why RSC is the friendliest club in the North!
  • The Sea Cadets: A great showcase of rowing, sailing and all the other adventures the Sea Cadets get up to on a Friday night.
  • University Sailing Clubs: Our resident University Sailing Clubs were on the water for some last-minute team racing practice before they both end the term with celebrations at the club.

On the Water Action

The lake was a hive of activity from start to finish. We were thrilled to offer the public a hands-on experience of life at the club:

  • Taster Sails: Our experienced helms took dozens of visitors out on the water, giving many their very first taste of wind-powered travel.
  • Powerboat Rides: For those looking for a bit more speed, the powerboat tours offered a thrilling perspective of the race course.
  • Class Demonstrations: On-shore demos showcased the diverse range of dinghies we sail at Ripon, from the accessible Optimists to the high-performance classes.
  • RC Yacht Demonstrations The Radio-Controlled yachting team, kept their small but perfectly formed boats sailing all day!

Hospitality at Its Finest

In the RSC Galley, our volunteer catering team worked tirelessly throughout the day, keeping everyone fuelled and happy. Training Principal Jimmy Haddock said after extensive sampling:

"The galley offered a fantastic range of hot and cold food. Whether it was a morning bacon sandwich or a hearty lunchtime snack, the quality was top-notch and the service came with a smile."
