N12, Enterprise and Double-Hander Open Meeting

Hot on the heels of the recent, very successful NEYYSA Team Racing event came the Open Meeting on 3 October for three different fleets. Ten National 12s were joined by 13 Enterprises and 6 assorted double-handers with a total of 20 visiting crews to race in sparkling conditions, with a steady wind and sunshine throughout the day. The fleets raced separately with the Enterprises setting off first, followed by the N12s and then the double-handers. The wind was most cooperative and allowed a long beat up the lake from almost all of the south lake to almost the top of the north lake. This was followed by a long run back downwind to 4. With only a handful of asymmetric boats on the water – two Club Visions and a sole RS200 – this suited most of the classes present, a goose-winged jib for the first two fleets and a symmetric spinnaker for the three Miracles
Lunch was available from the Galley and there seemed some reluctance to leave the shore afterwards by some sailors, with some having to be encouraged away from enjoying the sunshine and the chance to catch up with friends from other clubs. However, racing resumed from about 1.30 and two back to back races were held in the afternoon. These were followed by the prize giving with a substantial array of prizes accompanied by tea and cakes (plus the bar was open, always a bonus after a busy day on the water). Some sailors then stayed on for a meal and a social get together in the early evening.
On the Sunday several helms and crews who had stayed overnight joined in the usual Club Sunday racing programme, joining club boats in the RNLI Pursuit and Autumn Handicap series races, followed by another, smaller prize giving.
