Ripon SC - Regional Finalist, RYA Club of the Year

At the start of our last club newsletter, Starboard Tack, I promised you big, exciting news and here it is...

Ripon Sailing Club has been selected as the CLUB OF THE YEAR regional finalist for the North East!

I am absolutely delighted to be able to share this news with you today, ahead of voting opening on 23rd November.

What is club of the year?

RYA and Yachts & Yachting recognise the outstanding achievement of sailing clubs across the UK through the Club of the Year Awards. This annual award recognises and promotes the hard work which goes into making sailing clubs successful. In doing so, they are able to encourage, reward, learn from and share examples of best practice within our sailing community.

How did this happen?

Back in August, Committee agreed to make an application to the Club of the Year awards. This was in recognition of the hard work of club members furthering the sport of sailing in what has been a significantly challenging year for everyone. We made our application, which consisted of a nomination form, 5 year plan and supporting documents, to the RYA who then worked through all the applicants and shortlisted a finalist in each region.

What's next?

Once the RYA have selected a finalist in each region, these clubs go forward to a public vote which opens on 23rd November. The votes are collated and the national winner is announced at the RYA dinghy show in February 2021. We will be sending out voting information in the coming weeks. We need members, friends and supporters of the club to vote for us.

I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of the club, our committee and our membership - everyone has contributed to this award in some way, large or small and it is perfectly fitting that it is announced at a time when we are reflecting on the contributions made by members past. I am certain that we would not have been in the lucky position we find ourselves in today, had it not been for the prudent and passionate management of the committees that have gone before this one.

Personally, in this ever changing world, where nothing seems certain any more, I can safely say that our constant in the Kerslake household has been Ripon Sailing Club; it has become part of lives in ways we could not have imagined and given us so much as a family. I would like to say a massive thank you to each and every member who has supported us, to support RSC!

I look forward to the public vote opening later this month, and together, I believe we are in with a very real chance of winning the national award!

Fair winds,

Jamie Kerslake - Commodore
