Covid-19 Update - 19th March 2020

Published 10:16 on 19 Mar 2020

The safety of our members and their families is of the upmost importance to us. Following the most recent update issued by the UK Government, specifically advising against mass gatherings, minimising social contact and avoiding non-essential travel; Committee has unanimously agreed that we need to postpone till at least 30 April; which is consistent with the RYA's plans for all major sailing events organised under their burgee.

Committee has not taken this decision lightly but we do not feel that it is right, or fair, to be asking members to attend site to complete duties or for the club to actively go against Government advice and their request for us all to contribute towards minimising the spread of the virus.

To be clear, this cancellation applies to all planned Radio Controlled Yachting, WAGALERS, Training, Improvers, Kickstarter, Race Coaching, Open Meetings, Wednesday Evening & Sunday Racing and organised Social Activities, such as Camping & Easter Weekend.

We are aware that bookings have already been made for the first training course of the year as well as improvers and we will be in touch in the coming days regarding these bookings and how we will manage changes.

The club is open for members to use during this period of non-operation; there will be no galley, bar or safety boat cover and the club boats & equipment are not available for use. You may continue to sail at your own risk, please consider your sailing abilities and whether you should venture out without safety cover. If you arrange buddy sailing with other members, this is done at your own risk and initiation.

If you use the clubhouse and changing rooms; please make use of the cleaning materials that will be provided so that you minimise the risk of infection transfer to other members. If you are there at the same time as other members; please consider your obligations to maintain social distancing to minimise the risk of infection transfer.

Again, we encourage you to follow Government advice regarding isolation and minimising social contact, particularly if you or a family member has increased susceptibility to infection from existing illness or you are over the age of 70.

For the latest information, please see the Government website for help and advice. https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-response

Committee is doing everything it can to keep things going at Ripon Sailing Club. We find ourselves in testing times; for many of us this is the most difficult and unusual situation we have encountered in our lifetimes and it is hard to reconcile the feeling of helplessness and the unknown and turn them into positives. However, the club has existed for over 60 years and has weathered many storms, this is another, albeit on a larger scale and we will move on from this, together.

I re-iterate the closing message from my previous email, which resonated with so many of you; that in times of crisis, family and friendship is the backbone of what we stand for and if you need any support during the days and weeks ahead, whether it be a friendly chat or more practical help, please reach out to me, and to your Committee, for assistance.
