RYA Level 3 Better Sailing

Ready to move beyond the basics and really start enjoying your sailing?

The RYA Level 3 Better Sailing course is designed for sailors who have completed RYA Level 2 and are confident sailing in light to moderate conditions. This course builds independence, confidence and boat handling skills, helping you become a more capable and aware sailor.

What You'll Learn

During the course, you'll develop:

  • Improved boat control and trim
  • Confident sailing in a wider range of wind conditions
  • Sailing more efficiently upwind and downwind
  • Greater Independence
  • Basic racing awareness and mark rounding
  • Greater understanding of boat balance and sail setting

Level 3 is all about moving from "I can sail" to "I can sail well."

Who Is It For?

This course is ideal for:

  • Junior or adult sailors who have completed RYA Level 2
  • Sailors who want to build confidence before progressing to racing
  • Those looking to sail more independently at club sessions

You should already be able to:

  • Rig and launch a boat with minimal assistance
  • Sail a triangular course
  • Tack and gybe confidently

Course Structure

Delivered over structured training sessions at Ripon Sailing Club, the course combines:

  • On-water coaching
  • Individual feedback
  • Practical skill challenges
  • Small group learning

Our qualified RYA instructors focus on building confidence in a safe, supportive environment on North Lake.

What Happens Next?

After completing RYA Level 3, sailors often progress into:

  • Club racing
  • Youth & Junior development squads
  • RYA Stage 4 or Seamanship skills
  • Assistant Instructor pathways (in time)

Level 3 is where sailing really starts to feel natural.
