Course outlines

RYA Seamanship Skills

A very popular course which aims to teach more advanced boat handling skills and the associated theory. Whatever your level of skill, you will derive something from this course. You will learn about rudderless sailing, sailing backwards, heaving to, man overboard recovery, capsize recovery, reefing afloat, and being towed.
Theory will include understanding of sailing terminology, collision regulations, and meteorology.

RYA Level 1 Start Sailing

The first sailing course for teenagers and adults. You will learn the basics of boat handling techniques and background knowledge, and will have the opportunity to sail both in crewed and single-handed dinghies. On completion of the course you should be confident on the water in light winds and have a basic understanding of the sailing dinghy and how it works.

Young Opportunity Course

This course, popularly known as the “Oppy” course and unique to Ripon SC.
Provides an opportunity for youngsters from 6 to 12(ish) years to get a first taste of sailing, or gain further confidence, under carefully controlled and safe conditions. Most participants will achieve an RYA Stage 1 certificate, with the more experienced achieving Stage 2.
We can usually supply Optimist or Topper dinghies for the course.
Always over-subscribed, so early application is essential:

Application forms available from Judith Hart on 01423 865873 as soon as the March edition of ‘Starboard Tack’ arrives on your doormat.

RYA Level 2 Basic Skills

This course builds on the skills learnt at Level 1. On completion, successful candidates will be safety conscious, have a good basic knowledge of sailing, and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

RYA Junior Stage 2 and 3

This course is for youngsters who have completed stage 1 or 2 , perhaps on the Young Opportunity course, and have gained sufficient experience and confidence to move on to more advanced boat handling techniques and sailing theory. Suitable for ages 7 -12.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

This course covers a wide range of practical skills and the necessary theory to enable candidates to learn safe handling and seamanship in planing powerboats. The course includes training in approaching and recovery of persons from the water. A small amount of homework will be required between course days.

Safety Boat Familiarisation

These 2 hour sessions are free to members and run at 6-15pm. They are mandatory for anyone using the club safety boats, and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have attended a session prior to undertaking a Safety Boat duty. Please contact Peter Chignell (01423 323721) to book your session.

Start Racing

Aimed at all those who race and want to improve their racing skills as part of the days racing, covering: rules, boat setup, boat handling, mark rounding, starting etc etc.
