Course outlines
RYA Level 1 Start Sailing
This is the first sailing course for teenagers and adults with little or no experience. In 2 days you will learn the basics of boat handling techniques and background knowledge, and will have the opportunity to sail both in crewed and single-handed dinghies. On completion of the course you should be capable on the water in light winds and have a basic understanding of the sailing dinghy and how it works. Club boats are available for Level 1 and 2 courses.
Young Opportunity Course
This course, popularly known as the “Oppy” course is unique to Ripon SC and is always run on the Saturday and Monday of the first Mayday Bank Holiday weekend. It provides an opportunity for youngsters, usually aged 7-12 years, to get a first taste of sailing. 30 children, divided into about 5 teaching groups, each taught by a qualified instructor with an assistant, gain confidence and learn to sail under carefully controlled and safe conditions. Most first time participants will achieve an RYA Stage 1 certificate, with the more experienced achieving Stage 2. Children may attend this course only twice. The course is in Optimist, Tera and Topper dinghies, that
are supplied by the club or your own boat of these classes.
This course is always over-subscribed, so early application is essential.
Application forms available from Judith Hart on 01423 865873
as soon as the March edition of ‘Starboard Tack’
arrives on your doormat.

This 3day course builds on the skills learnt at Level 1. On completion, successful candidates will be safety conscious, have a good but basic knowledge of sailing, and be capable of leaving and returning to the jetties safely, and sailing successfully on all points of sailing in light winds.
RYA Level 3 Better Sailing
This is an improvers’ course for those who have gained Level 2 or for those who are sailing at that level. It hones the skills that you have learned and builds confidence in a range of conditions (subject to the weather!). It covers aspects of the Seamanship course, the Start Racing course and the Sailing with Spinnakers course. You will be encouraged to sail most of the course in your own boat, but there will be opportunities to try out different classes of boat including some fast ‘whizzy’ boats.
