newThe time has come to say goodbye to this web site, it has served the club well over the years, keeping members up to speed with news and events. There are two club web sites running at the moment, this one and a nice shiny new one over at www.ripon-sc.org once all of the documents and information from this site is in place in the new site this one will be closed, no further updates will take place on this site, all new material, news and information will only be posted to the new site from 30/01/12 so please visit the new site, add it to your favorites and delete links to the old site.

The new site is being developed to allow more people to update the content, it will also require members to log in and create a user account so that they can gain access to members only material.

The general information areas of the site will still be readily available to casual visitors.

Don't be confused by the 5olo.com web address that you will see displayed in the early days of the new site, this is simply a temporary home for the site until our current web hosts are able to manage the software required to host the new site.

Please allow a little time for your account to be approved, we need to check all applicants names against the membership database before approving them!   You will receive an e-mail as soon as your account has been activated.

Please also give us some feedback on the new site, negative or positive, it is after all your club web site.

newThe next working party is this Sunday 22/01/12 9-30 start, the galley will be open for hot lunches etc

Winter working parties start Sunday 8th January
Members are reminded that the first of this year’s working parties takes place this Sunday, 8 January.
We have a number of tasks to accomplish over the coming weeks and this weekend will see us make a start on redecorating the clubhouse and also sorting out the boat park, ensuring that any boats which are no longer registered with the club are removed to make space for members’ boats.
We may, depending on the number of attendees and the weather, also undertake some work lopping willows. Please come along and do your bit to help out. Work starts at 9.30am and Emma and Lynn will be offering a hot lunch so you don’t need to make a pack up!

Dinner & Prize giving
The deadline for booking your tickets for this year’s Dinner and Prizegiving, to be held on 28 January at the Masonic Hall in Harrogate, is fast approaching. If you are hoping to come along please bring your completed menu choice form (they are available on the website) and payment to the working party on Sunday. This event is open to all members, not just prize winners. There is a junior menu option available for those under 12’s who don’t want the full meal.

High winds again - more boats blown over, is one of them yours?

A gust of 74mph has been recorded at the club this morning and a quick look at the boat park webcam reveals that one or two boats have been blown over, please try to visit the club to check that your boat is still secure, remembering that if your boat blows over and causes damage to another one you will be responsible for the repairs/claim

This is what happens if you don't tie your boat down well with good quality rope, making use of the stakes put in place for the purpose.

Notice that even the small Tera is well tied down with a decent nylon strap!

This is what your boat and tie downs should look like.
With the rope going right round the shrouds, at least once round the mast, right round the other shroud then well fastened to the stakes

New Years Day Racing

Welcome in the new year and a new sailing season with a couple of short races.
Racing will start around 12-00pm with Dennis Altoft & Charlie Tebbutt in charge.
The Galley will be open as will the bar, so why not come along for some post Christmas fresh air?

Frostie

Final Frostbite & Christmas Lunch
The last 2 races of this seasons frostbite series took place in near ideal conditions, it was certainly a cold day but the sun was shining and the wind came out to play providing ideal conditions for the lightweight Streakers that have dominated the series slow fleet. Chris Wright led the way in both of the final races with Richard Brook never too far behind. In the fast fleet Rob Paterson (Phantom) continued his fight with Philip David (N12) whilst Richard Whiteley took a day off safe in the knowledge he already had 2nd place in the bag.
Fast fleet results here..... Slow fleet results here....

Lynn & Emma put on a splendid post race Christmas lunch to help bring a festive end to this years racing.

newBoxing Day Blast (or Bimble!)

12-30pm Start
Blow off those cobwebs, escape from Great Aunt Dolores, a trip to the sales and the remnants of the turkey and come sailing instead. Racing starts at noon, with one long race planned. Bring down the Twiglets and Cheesy Footballs that didn't get put out for tea on Christmas day (and some turkey sandwiches!) and join in a festive contributed buffet in the clubhouse afterwards. If sailing feels like too much of a struggle why not just come down with something for the buffet and join in the social side? The bar will be open after sailing.

Tera_Training

The club will shortly host the first of a series of Tera coaching events to be run in the North of England during the winter months.  This will take place on 15 and 16 October and the coach will be Jonathan Lewis, the National Tera Squad coach.  Further sessions are planned for other venues during the winter months and it is hoped that a Northern Tera coach will be identified to work with this group.

The coaching is designed to develop and improve the skills of Tera sailors in the North and to help the class association develop in this region.  The coaching is free and open to club members and other Tera sailors in the region, with a limit of 16 places.

Advance registration is essential – please email coaching@ripon-sc.org.uk for more information and to register your interest.

Remembering that any damage your boat causes to other boats will be your responsibility!

new Southport 24 hour race - Whilst some hardy souls battled high winds at Ripon this weekend (and well done to all our trainees for coping with the harsh conditions on Saturday) some of our members were taking part in the Southport 24 hour race, where conditions were equally harsh.  The team finished 29th out of 69 boats, racing for 24 hours in force 4 to 6 winds.  Richard and Millie Pryke were our team for the Midnight Cup and achieved the second fastest lap time between midnight and 1am.

Well done Team Ripon. Final placings here..

August Bank Holiday - Yes this really is August weather - hailstones falling on Saturday 26th August 2011!
August- hail
There's a packed programme of activities at the club over the August Bank Holiday weekend with activities to suit all ages and abilities, and camping too!
On Saturday afternoon Dennis will run some informal racing, which will start at 14.30.  A volunteer for Assistant Safety Boat Officer is required - contact Dennis if you can help out.  Thanks to Kevin Vials for volunteering to be SBO.

On Sunday we have 3 personal handicap races, starting at 11.00.  These races are open to all.
To check that you have been allocated a personal handicap for this event please check this results file, if your name does not appear in the results table please contact sailing@ripon-sc.org.uk with your details.
The aim of the personal handicaping system is to make it easier for less experienced helms to do well whilst making the regular trophy winners work harder for the spoils. Personal handicap numbers may be adjusted on the day if necessary.

Monday is 'Fun Day', with events getting underway at 10am with the Hangover Stakes, and running through to late afternoon with a mix of on and off the water activities including old favourites such as the Anagram  and Balloon Races, and a new twist on barrel racing (wait and see!!), Fancy dress (crew and boats - any theme), Scavenger and Treasure Hunts etc.  There is a full list of activities on the noticeboard - please sign up if you can help run one of the races or activities.  Thanks to Tim and Sonja Wafer for volunteering to provide safety cover - a couple of extra volunteers would be good to have on stand by.

The bar and galley will be open during the weekend - if you can help in the galley (serving tea, coffee, confectionery etc) please sign up on the noticeboard.

new RYA CEO visits the Yorkshire & Humberside Region 28-06-11.
Sarah Treseder visited the Yorkshire & Humberside region, visiting Otley Sailing club before going on to an informal reception at Ripon SC where she met with representatives from clubs around the area.
We took the opportunity to get Sarah involved in our youngsters eco project by inviting her to help them sow one of the 50 wildflower patches that are appearing around the club site.

F.L.O.W.E.R.S. -are there any ladies out there fed up of never getting the chance to sail (possibly since you did the level 1 and 2 course 3 years ago and not been on the water because you’re always rigging boats for kids, always crewing,  drinking tea etc.. etc..) then you are invited to join F.L.O.W.E.R.S. basically it’s very informal sailing (and a little bit of coaching/racing from Dennis) starting at 12.00 on Wednesdays finished in time to pick up from school.  Club boats will be available to hire, or do like me and borrow your son or daughters topper.
I’ll be at the club from 11.00 please come and join us, all abilities are welcome (other than Olympians). If you want to know more ring Sharron Mckenzie or e-mail sailing@ripon-sc.org.uk

Recycling bins -
We have recently taken delivery of two large recycling bins, courtesy of club member Richard Todd.
These bins are situated by the hedge to the rear of the clubhouse and are to be used as follows.
Large bin - cardboard, cans, plastic (to be bagged separately)
Small bin - glass (regardless of colour).

Please do not use these bins for general waste, BBQ refuse, dog poo etc as this will prevent us sending the waste for recycling.
This initiative forms part of our Eco Challenge and will help us reduce the amount of waste which we send to landfill.

Kids Club -Saturday 21st May 1.30-4.00 it’s the first Kids Club. This is a great chance to get started on the water this season . It is an informal session, which this year will include kids games on the water run by Alan Cage. If you haven’t done any sailing then come and join in. There are plenty of opportunities to double up in boats, or just get started steering between the jetties. If you don’t have your own boat you are welcome to hire a club boat.
Kids teas will be available from the Galley after Kids Club, please order with Dawn when you arrive.

Volvo Junior Racing Series has started. If you are able to steer around a triangular course, then you are able to do this. It is a coaching session followed by 2 short races. Rigged and changed for a 10 o clock start!!! Club boats are available.

As ever we are looking for volunteers to help with Safety Boat and Assistant Safety Boat for Kids Club. Please email me if you are able to help - training can be provided if you are not familiar with our safety boats.

Topper & Tera Coaching 2nd & 3rd June 2011

We are delighted to be able to tell you that we have been successful in securing 2 days of Junior coaching which will run at the club on 2 and 3 June 2011. The coaching which is on offer will cover Tera and Topper dinghies and is available to any Junior member who is able to sail a triangular course confidently (ie they should hold at least a Level 2 certificate). The coaching days lead on from the Level 3/Start Racing course which is running Monday to Wednesday of that week. We hope that we will see lots of additional Toppers taking part in our open meeting on 4 June as a result of this training! The coaching is specific to Tera and Topper dinghies and unfortunately we cannot accept other boats for these 2 days.

There are a limited number of club boats available for the coaching - we have our 3 club Tera dinghies, will be borrowing a further 3 and we have the 4 club owned Topper dinghies too. Please sign up for the coaching via coaching@ripon-sc.org.uk and indicate whether you will be providing your own boat or will need to use a club one. The club boats will be allocated on a first come first served basis and we expect demand to outstrip supply. If you do book a club boat and your plans change please make sure you let us know so we can let someone else have the benefit of a club boat. There is no charge for the training - the Tera coach (John) is being funded by RS, and the Topper coach (Katie, who coached for us last year and was a great hit) is being funded by the RYA.

Please note that each participant must have a responsible adult on site during the course in case of emergencies. This doesn't mean it has to be 1:1, why not join up with some other parents and share the duty?

BOAT PARK APPROACHES CAPACITY!
We have had a high level of requests for new and additional berths over the last 2 months and as a result of that there is every chance that the boat park will soon be full.
A number of berths are being held back to cover members who do not yet currently own a boat but who may require a berth during the course of the season but if you are considering buying an additional boat and will want a berth for it please check that berths are available before you make your purchase.
If you have any questions about this please contact the Boat Park Warden, Bernard Clark (details in the yearbook).

The eco bench story -The eco warriors have been at it again!  This time the youngsters spent the day building 2 “eco” benches for members to enjoy, one is now sited on the point, the other close to the racehut.
Read & see the story here…

Junior members collect their Eco Award of £1000 at the Dinghy Show on Saturday 5 March.  They were busy again the next day, and the club now has 2 new benches as a result of their hard work.  One is sited near the race hut, the other is at the Point.  The children also made a number of bat boxes which will be put up shortly.

After our Junior members had collected their Eco Award, they went on to be presented with the sail for our new Tera dinghy, funded by the Eric Twiname Trust.  Here they are, with Peter Whipp - Chairman of the ETT.
